Culinaria: a taste adventure

Culinaria experience

The Culinaria festival of gastronomy returns to Brussels from 18th to 22nd October, with over thirty of Belgium’s best chefs showcasing their culinary talents. Each participating chef has developed a dish especially for the festival and with three different five-course gourmet menus to choose from each night, Culinaria is the perfect opportunity to taste and explore the very best of Belgian cuisine. The festival also offers a unique opportunity for foodies to see their idols at work, preparing dishes in the open kitchens, or even sitting down to share a special Sunday brunch on 22nd October.

This year’s line-up includes big names such as Lionel Rigolet (Comme Chez Soi), Yves Mattagne (Sea Grill), and The Restaurant’s own Pierre Balthazar, who will be serving a very special dish of marinated mi-cuit tuna with golden enoki mushrooms, burrata and coriander.

Why not combine a trip to Culinaria with a night in the stars at The Hotel, with our special offer, combining a VIP Passport to the festival plus a night in your choice of room?

Brussels Celebrity Marathon

Meet some Belgian sporting heroes and raise money for a very worthy cause this Saturday 14th October. The charity La Tête hors de l’Eau, which supports and funds reconstructive surgery, artificial limbs and support services for disabled youngsters, is organizing a fundraising relay “marathon” at the Brussels David Lloyd health club.  Twenty teams – including one from The Hotel – will take it in turns to run on twenty treadmills until they have racked up a full marathon distance: 42,195 kilometres! Radio and TV personalities will provide real-time commentary and ranking of the participating teams.

In addition to the run, the event will feature demonstrations of Olympic and Paralympic sports by Belgian celebrity athletes, including John John Dohmen, captain of the Olympic silver medal winning Red Lions hockey team, voted best player in the world in 2017. There are also fun activities for children and the opportunity to have your picture taken with some of your sporting heroes.

If you would like to join The Hotel’s team or simply come along to cheer all the athletes on, you can find more details here.

Parking enhancement

Parking spots are always an issue in any busy city. Avoid the hassle of finding a spot in the city and park in our secured underground parking at a reduced rate.

Our privatized parking has 24/7 security and is exclusively for The Hotel guests. Instead of paying €35 for an entire day/night, you can now book it at the reduced rate of €25. This reduction can be obtained when booking by clicking on further enhancements.

Art, art and … art

Brussels is becoming more and more the go-to place for artists and fairs all around the world. From antiques to contemporary pieces, from architecture to paintings – with its rich art history (Magritte and Horta just to name a few) and its central location, it is no wonder why Belgium is slowly but surely becoming Europe’s artistic hub.

The Hotel couldn’t be happier about this trend as we have a strong connection with art. Whether it is our fashion photography throughout the property or our iconic fashion library, art & design is in every corner. That’s why we love to welcome initiatives like the Accessible Art Fair to the city.

Accessible Art Fair (ACAF) has a long standing tradition with both fairs in Brussels as well as New York. ACAF’s mission is to offer a platform for artists and designers and make them accessible to a discerning audience. It offers the opportunity to purchase quality works of art and design and meet the creators behind the work. All of the works are carefully selected and handpicked by a panel of experts which guarantees the quality of the art presented.

Purchasing a work of art might seem daunting to some. Accessible Art Fair strives to make this experience as pleasant as possible by removing the barriers between the buyer and the artist.

They put the public directly in touch with the artists behind the work. ACAF has been bringing original art, photography, design and sculpture to the art buying public since 2006, so this 11th year is bound to be a success as well!

Opération Thermos x The Restaurant by Pierre Balthazar

We are delighted to announce that a charity gastronomic dinner with chef Pierre Balthazar will take place at The Restaurant, on Monday September 18th 2017. The dinner will be hosted by our chef in partnership with Opération Thermos, a non profit association, for which the funds raised through this dinner will be donated to.

It’s not the first time that Pierre Balthazar combines gastronomy and charitable gestures. After having organised the Belgian Christmas tree Design’ gala dinner for two years in a row, and having himself contributed to Opération Thermos food distribution, it was important to him to do even more. He decided to organise an exclusive charity dinner to support Opération Thermos. This fund-raising will finance no less than 2,000 meals for those most in need.

In 1987, at the initiative of a few young Scouts affected by street poverty, a non profit association of several hundred volunteers was created. The aim of Opération Thermos is to help the homeless and other disadvantaged people, in particular through the daily distribution of full hot meals at the Botanique Metro station in Brussels from 8pm to 11pm.This year, Opération Thermos celebrates its 30th anniversary, or nearly 600,000 meals served to those who need it the most!

At The Hotel we don’t like to rest on our laurels, that’s why we have re-freshed two of our biggest meeting rooms. La Terrasse O2

The countdown has begun! On the 19th of May, La Terrasse O2 will launch and it officially indicates summer.

This year La Terrasse de l’Hippodrome has changed its name to La Terrasse O2. This symbol for oxygen points out to the engagement of the initiators to reduce the ecological footprint. In doing so, they join the eco-responsibility movement in particular through a co-operation with the Reforest Action project, among others. The new “green bar” is the place where to have a drink, dance and brunch this summer.

Terrasse O2

Come along and share fabulous moments from midday to midnight in the middle of tropical plants.

No need to travel abroad to be able to enjoy a pleasant moment in a summer atmosphere.

Savour a cocktail while having your feet in the water (yes, they have a pool!) after a long working day and let your taste buds be delighted by a brunch or dinner at the cosy restaurant of La Terrasse O2.

You know when you arrive but you don’t know when you will leave. Let yourself be carried away by the early summer feelings, the freshness of a cocktail and the festive ambiance! Trust us, you don’t want to miss this rendez-vous.

Flower Carpet in Brussels’ city center

Every two years, the Brussels Grand Place is adorned with its most magnificent attire and becomes a gigantic flower oasis. Being a UNESCO heritage, the Grand Place is the perfect location right in the city center to display this marvelous scene that takes place from the 12th up until the 15th of August 2016.

This year will be even more special, as the famous carpet of flowers will be celebrating its 20th anniversary! With its Japanese theme, celebrating 150 years of friendship between Japan and Belgium, it is bound to be a blooming surprise.

Flower Carpet night

The city’s flower carpet will consist of over 600.000 bright begonias, a typical Belgian flower fostered with great care in the beautiful city of Ghent. The robust tuberous begonia lends beauty and freshness to the flower carpet. A native of the West Indies, the hearty begonia is resistant to all weather conditions: intense sunshine, violent winds, rain, cold… Begonias come in a rich palette ranging from the most vivid colours to delicate pastel shades, with in between the many-coloured and white flowers that reflect sunlight so well. Belgium is the world’s largest producer of begonias: 60 million bulbs each year! 80% of the total production, cultivated almost exclusively in the area of Ghent since 1860, is exported, primarily to the Netherlands, France and the United States.

Flower Carpet

More than 100 volunteer gardeners put together this giant floral puzzle in less than four hours. The day before the opening, the spaces between the floral motifs are filled in using rolls of sod. The flowers are so closely-packed (300 per square meter, i.e. around 600,000 flowers in all!) that they can´t be blown away, and indeed they create their own micro-climate! If there´s a heat wave, the sod is watered to prevent it from wilting. If the weather is too wet, the grass can grow by 4 to 5 centimeters in 3 days. The flowers remain fresh and preserve their splendour during the four days.

No, there’s more… Not only delighting the eyes and the ears (the flowers have a wonderful scent), there will also be a concert to kick off the this event with music that perfectly suits this exciting floral event in the capital.

To make the perfect picture, you can enter the city hall and go right to top for the perfect picture!

The Flower Carpet is open for the public from Friday 12th of August up until Monday 15th of August included. Access to the balcony:

August 12th: from 1 pm to 6 pm
August 13th to 15th: from 10 am to 10 pm
