With a decade’s experience in taking care of the discerning palates of heads of state as Executive Chef for the Council of the European Union, chef Pierre Balthazar is the genius behind the gourmet contents of your picnic hamper. Pierre has chosen from some of the best local suppliers and crafted a selection of easy-to-eat finger foods including artisanal sausage, fresh Lebanese flatbread, a cave-matured Maredsous cheese, an olive tapenade and roasted red beet hummus.
What’s a picnic without something sparkling? Pierre paired all of the gourmet goodness with a bottle of sparkling water, a bottle of still water, and a bottle of Moët & Chandon. Moët Champagne is synonymous with celebration and complements the heritage surroundings with it’s history dating back to 1743.
The Design

The first-century Roman Apicius likely was the originator of the thought: “We eat first with our eyes”, and we couldn’t agree more with a man famous for his love of all things gourmet and luxurious.
It’s fitting then that we partnered with the renowned Belgian design house SCAPA HOME to fill the basket with designer touches to elevate your picnic experience. Famous for their contemporary but timeless designs, SCAPA HOME have added dinnerware, glassware, table linen and a beautiful picnic blanket to the basket.
The Setting
Step out of the hotel and take your pick from some of the city’s most charming parks.
On our doorstep you’ll find one of our favourites, the quietly understated Parc d’Egmont. Located in the grounds of a former palace, the Palais d’Egmont, the park is a hidden gem in the heart of Brussels. The lawns are spacious and quiet - perfect for a picnic spread - and there’s more than enough to entertain the eyes with the grand buildings surrounding the park, the statues dotted around and the large trees offering shade and character. If you’d like to travel a little further with your basket, there’s a selection of other parks within a short walk or drive from the hotel. Parc de Bruxelles, the ‘Royal Park’ is a famous landmark with an impressive fountain at it’s centre. It might not be as quiet as Parc d’Egmont, but it offers rich history, architectural marvels like the Royal Park Theatre, and 32 acres of potential picnic space. Other park favourites include the Cinquantenaire, which combines grand park grounds with cultural highlights, and the peaceful ponds and pretty trees in Parc Léopold. If you’re willing to jump on public transport or hop in your car, then you’ll love the Sonian Forest and its offshoot the Bois de la Cambre. The forest is a truly wild piece of protected land connected to the city with carpets of woodland flowers, two-hundred-year-old trees, and wooded walkways that have earned it the deserved title ‘the lungs of the city’. Bois de la Cambre is a little less wild, but no less enchanting for a picnic in the city.
